How to Wash Lingerie and Shape-Wear

With warmer weather and lots of leisure, summer is the perfect time to break out those lighter layers. Have you been wearing more lingerie and shape-wear than usual?

Though styling them is lots of fun, washing them the wrong way can be risky. To avoid costly damage, it’s important to learn how to wash lingerie and shape-wear the right way.

After your next workout or night out, follow these instructions to keep your summer staples safe!

How to Wash Lingerie and Shape-wear

How to Wash Lingerie

The first step is simple: sort your pieces by material. Then, as always, we recommend reading each garment’s care label (check out this blog to learn how).

For lingerie made from sheer fabrics, odds are high that you’ll see an icon featuring a bucket with a hand inside—AKA, the hand-wash symbol.

Never attempted hand-washing before? Don’t panic. It’s far less time-consuming than you’d think! Here’s how:

  1. Fill a freshly cleaned bowl, bucket, or sink with warm water.

  2. Add a dash of liquid laundry detergent. In general, gentle detergents are best for lingerie.

  3. Place your pieces in the water and allow them to soak for 30 minutes.

  4. If certain spots are still soiled after 30 minutes, gently rub the fabric together.

  5. When it’s time to rinse, switch to cool water. Be gentle, and don’t wring them out! To remove excess water, lay the lingerie on a clean dry towel, and roll it up for a few minutes.

Briefs made from cotton, silk, nylon, or lace can be washed in a machine, but only if you place them inside a mesh bag. Just be sure to choose a cool or warm temperature with a delicate cycle.

Finally, the drying process. This step is simple: air dry everything! Even on low heat, your dryer can seriously damage dainty lingerie. You can use your usual drying rack, or, weather permitting, opt for line drying.

How to Wash Shape-wear

To wash your shape-wear, you can follow almost the exact same steps as for lingerie. You should also check the label, hand wash when needed, use a garment bag in the washing machine, and air dry.

However, there are a few differences to be aware of:

  • For handwashing, you can only soak your shapewear for 10-15 minutes instead of 30.

  • For machine washing, choose cool or cold water to avoid shrinking.

  • For drying, try to avoid placing shape-wear pieces in direct sunlight.
