Whether you’re living solo or sharing your house with family, every bathroom has to endure a lot of traffic. With that being said, it’s also the room in our homes we want to feel the cleanest, no matter how many people are using it.
If you’re still pondering how to keep it that way, don’t worry—we’ve got your back. In today’s blog, we’re going to share our top tips on how to wash bath mats, plus all of your other bathroom essentials.
Let’s go!
How to Wash Bath Mats (and Other Bathroom Essentials)
How to Wash a Bath Mat
Time to confess—how often do you really deep clean your bath mats? For most people, the answer will be a simple one: not enough!
If you’re not sure how to get the best results when it comes to washing yours, take note of the following tips:
Check your mats for stains and pre-treat with a DIY stain remover (find all of our best home remedies for stains on our blog).
Wash your bath mat on a cold cycle in your own laundry machine (or at your local Denver laundromat), using a gentle detergent – avoid fabric softener.
Hang your mat outside to dry naturally. Mats with rubber backing should not be put into the dryer, as the rubber will eventually hardened and shed off like sand—creating quite a mess to clean up in your washer or dryer. Mats without rubber backing can be placed in the dryer on a low setting (avoid drying for too long or on a high heat to avoid melting or shrinking).
Mop your bathroom floor and dry before replacing the mat to kill any lingering bacteria or dirt.
TOP TIP: To keep your bathroom smelling fresh, spritz your bath mat with a DIY linen spray a couple of times a week!
How to Wash Towels
Towels are an essential part of every bathroom, but not everyone knows how to wash them correctly. Follow these steps to keep your towels white, fluffy and smelling fresh ahead of every use!
To wash towels effectively:
Separate towels into whites and colors and avoid washing together.
If your towels have a particularly musty odor, pre-treat by washing them with half a cup of baking soda first (without detergent).
Once pre-treated, wash your towels on a regular cycle with a small amount of detergent (warm for colors, hot for whites).
Avoid fabric softener to keep towels fluffy (it’s okay to use it every now and then, but definitely not in every wash).
Air dry on the line or use the dryer on a low heat setting.
Fold and store in a dry place before your next use.
The same instructions apply to flannels and hand towels too, so make sure to throw them all in together to avoid wasting energy on multiple washes.
Laundromats are a great solution for towel washing, especially if you don’t have a large machine at home to tackle your whole load in one go. As well as our commercial towel laundry service at WaveMAX, we also offer drop-off services for home laundry too.
How to Wash a Shower Curtain
Shower curtains are a great way to keep your bathroom safe from any sprays or splashes, but mold or mildew can develop quickly if left unwashed for long periods.
To wash your shower curtain:
Take the shower curtain off the rail or rings.
If your curtain has one, read the care labels carefully before washing.
Wash in your machine or at the laundromat on a delicate cycle, using warm water.
Use a small amount of detergent (half a cap should do the trick), plus 1 cup of vinegar for extra deodorizing power.
Air dry outside or simply hang back on the rail—you may want to open a window to ventilate the room and speed up the process.
