How to Remove Armpit Stains and Smells from Clothes

Whether it’s a formal evening gown or a plain white tee, anything that touches the underarm can suffer from stubborn stains. Determined to banish armpit stains once and for all?

You’ve probably noticed by now that a standard laundry routine doesn’t always work. And even if you manage to remove the stain, you might still have a smell to contend with.

Don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to fight back against the dreaded underarm stain! Here’s how to remove armpit stains and keep your sweat-prone garments fresher for longer.

How to Remove Armpit Stains and Smells

Removing Armpit Stains from White Clothing

For white garments, you have two methods to choose from: the baking soda strategy or the oxygen bleach solution.

Cotton clothing will respond best to the baking soda method. Here’s what to do:

  1. Mix one part baking soda, one part hydrogen peroxide, and one part water in a bowl.

  2. Use a clean sponge or toothbrush to rub the mixture into the stained area.

  3. Allow the mixture to soak into the shirt for 30 minutes.

  4. Machine wash the shirt with heavy-duty detergent and warm water.

For extra tough stains on white garments, try the oxygen bleach method:

  1. Head to a well-ventilated room and put on rubber gloves.

  2. Mix two tablespoons of oxygen-based bleach powder and two tablespoons of household ammonia in a non-metal bowl.

  3. Rub the mixture into the stain with a soft-bristled brush for at least one minute.

  4. Let the solution soak into the shirt for at least ten minutes.

  5. Machine wash as normal with heavy-duty detergent.

Be sure to use oxygen bleach, not chlorine bleach. Mixing chlorine bleach with ammonia can create dangerous fumes!

Pro-Tip: only use the dryer once you’re confident the stain has been removed successfully. Machine-drying yellow stains can make them permanent, so opt for air-drying until they’re gone.

Removing Armpit Stains from Colored Clothing

Vinegar is a bit of a miracle ingredient, at least when it comes to laundry. If you have armpit stains or smells on colored clothing, the white vinegar method will be your best bet:

1)    Mix one part distilled white vinegar and one part water.

2)    Scrub the solution into the stain with a soft-bristled brush or toothbrush.

3)    Fill a sink or bucket with cool water, then add one cup of distilled white vinegar

4)    Soak your shirt in the solution for at least 30 minutes.

5)    Remove the shirt from the bucket, then machine wash in cold water with heavy-duty detergent.
