The Thriving Community Inside of WaveMAX Laundry

To Our Customers in Thornton, Colorado

In the late morning of Valentine’s Day 2021, our customers and team members received an unforgettable surprise at WaveMAX Laundry in Thornton. A water line in the office space above us broke, and the water began flooding our laundromat below. The huge amount of water caused enough damage that we were forced to close down for the next day-and-a-half. It was an event the entire team at WaveMAX Laundry in Thornton will never forget, but not because of the mess it created. Instead, it was just more proof of the amazing community which exists inside of WaveMAX Laundry.

Water from a plumbing line break in the unit above us was pouring down into the laundromat.

Showers of Love

A week has gone by since the laundromat was flooded. Needless to say, it was a stressful couple days for our entire team. Looking back though, we realize it wasn’t showers of water that poured down on us this Valentine’s Day—it was showers of love. A comment like that deserves some explanation…

It was a rush to shut off the water main to the entire building, as that was the only way to stop the flooding. The office space upstairs was vacant, and the location of the building water main shut-off was not immediately accessible, so even the Fire Department had to be involved. It would have been easy, and understandable, if everyone would have just grabbed their laundry and left. After all, the temperature was below zero outside. However, in the time the water was flowing, there were several customers who jumped into action. One customer jumped right in and helped our team shut off the laundromat’s main water valve. This quickly ruled out the possibility of it being any of our plumbing that was leaking (which it was not). There were other customers who were soaking wet, because they were helping to push water out the front door. Another customer helped to move vending machines, the arcade game and other fixtures out of the way of the raining water. They didn’t stop helping until the building water main was shut off and water stopped flowing into our space. These were selfless acts, which are touching to think about.

It didn’t stop there. Customers were pulling up for the next day-and-a-half while we were cleaning up the mess and working to put the laundromat back together. It was heartbreaking to have to turn them away. Then, when we opened back up, those same customers—who were typically Sunday or Monday regulars—came back later in the week. Rather than go somewhere else, they waited until we were back open. There was even one laundry drop-off customer who came by and offered to help with the clean-up and repairs.

And, despite having a full schedule, even the construction team who originally built the laundromat made repairs a high priority the following week, so we could recover quickly.

Bringing People Together

Since we opened in early 2019, we’ve always observed the community which exists inside the laundromat. It’s common to see couples and entire families doing their laundry together. You’ll see a mom and her son spending quality time together while they fold, or a father and daughter doing the same. Friends will come in together, so they can hang out while getting their laundry chore done. “See you next week” has always been a popular phrase our amazing customers will say as they are leaving. This is one of the things our team loves the most about coming in each day and knowing we help bring people together—one load of laundry at a time.

As mentioned prior, we had to temporarily close to clean up the mess and begin repairs. Even team members with the days off wanted to come over to help and speed things along. We all genuinely know and appreciate how much our entire community relies on the laundromat, and our team wanted to re-open as quickly as possible for our customers.
